GIVE AND TAKE: CRITICAL ANIMALS CREATIVE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM 2018
27 – 30 SEPT 2018
The 15th annual Critical Animals Creative Research Symposium will present an eclectic mix of panels, performances, exhibitions, installations and workshops, all designed to provoke thought, encourage collaboration and develop artistic practices.
This year Critical Animals is exploring ideas and research around the theme of Give and Take. From deconstructing internet culture and how we engage and produce information, to culture jamming, to explorations around rituals, memory and loss, to research into female facial hair and social norms about gender, to immersive performances that attempt to dismantle and examine the constructs of identity and nationhood from the perspective of a first-generation migrant. This year’s program is brimming with interdisciplinary, exploratory and research driven projects.
Critical Animals brings together artists, researchers, writers, academics, thinkers and students who are critically engaged in creative and experimental arts practices. The Symposium is open to anyone whose work experiments within the experience and interpretation of critical research. In this vein, Critical Animals endeavours to catalyse, strengthen, and explore the links between creative practice and theory. We have a flexible definition of research that encompasses creative, experimental, interrogative, discursive, and practice-led approaches.
The Lock-Up has been a key partner of Octapod for over ten years, supporting a range of TINA creative initiatives and events. In 2018, The Lock-Up continues as the key Critical Animals venue, working closely with Critical Animals to support the presentation of the Symposium and exhibition.
