Rhiannon Newton
Rhiannon Newton is a dancer and choreographer based in Sydney. Her practice spans choreography, improvisation, lecturing, and a body of research that distills relations between dance and repetition (always nodding to the impossibility of repetition).
In her work audiences are implicated in durational spaces that repeat to achieve contradictory states of stability and instability, during the course of which human behaviour and the limits of the body are explicated. Newton’s solo works have been presented at Metro Arts (Brisbane 2015), the Nagib On Stage Festival (Slovenia 2014), through the Dance Sites Network (Dancehouse, Critical Path, Strut Dance 2014), Movement Research at the Judson Church (New York 2011), Lucy Guerin Inc. (Melbourne 2011) and Under the Radar, Brisbane Festival (2011).
She researches and develops work in partnership with sound artist Kynan Tan, visual artist Benjamin Forster and choreographers Paea Leach and Jo Pollitt. Newton has been a resident artist at PAF (France), Movement Research (New York), Critical Path, The Centre for Interdisciplinary Arts, Ausdance, Bundanon Trust, PACT Centre for Emerging Artists and Brand X. She has worked for choreographers and companies Jan Fabre, Mala Kline, Odelya Kuperberg, Force Majeure, Rosalind Crisp, Jo Pollitt, Chrissie Parrott, Buzz Dance Theatre, Paea Leach, Aimee Smith, Alexandra Harrison, Sam Fox and Company Upstairs. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Dance from The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
