Feeling the fibres and knowing it on my hands… my hands just remembered. – Willie Messenger
miyarnuwimanha translates to ‘learning, becoming knowledgeable’ a concept that is explored by Yamaji Wajarri, Dutch and English artist Nicole Monks. In this exhibition, Monks explores the innate and unconscious interconnectedness to Country, community and culture.
miyarnuwimanha considers notions of knowledge transfer, resilience of the stolen generation and the complexities of living off Country on other mob’s unceded land.
Including a series of site-specific installations that engage with Yamaji Wajarri, WA arts making practices, Monks interweaves contemporary arts practices such as video, performance and installation to explore the universal knowings; to imagine, to create and to remember.
Developed collaboratively with First Nations artists locally and across Australia, the exhibition will explore the continuous knowing of Australia, connecting the past with the present and future. Collaborators working alongside include Yamaji Artists, Jenine Boeree, Luke Russell, Jasmine Miikika Craciun, Charmaine Papertalk Green, Willie Messenger, Bidi-Bidi Monks, Lotte Hilder, David Leha, Dale Collier, Elvie Dann, Jason Wing, Maddie Gibbs, John A Douglas and Donna Biles Fernando as Curatorial and Cultural Advisor.
