In her exhibition MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE Sara Morawetz considers the systems, tools, units and perspectives that shape the way we calibrate experience.
Employing instruments of measure as both concept and material, Sara Morawetz examines a network of physical, emotional and perceptual apparatus that position the body in time and space.
Through this collection of experimental actions and investigative artefacts, Morawetz underscores the performative, repetitive and durational knowledge embedded in acts of measure — duly capable of accuracy and determinacy, while remaining slippery and speculative when tested ‘in the field.’
MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE will include a new work developed for The Lock-Up and the first exhibition of her large-scale durational work étalon — a 112-day / 2,100km journey along the length of the Paris meridian to remeasure the curvature of the Earth and redetermine the length of the metre — exploring what it means to measure and be measured, and asks if in pursuit of such endeavours we can ever truly measure up?
This exhibition is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, the QAGOMA Foundation through the Vida Lahey Memorial Travelling Scholarship, the Musée des Arts et Métiers, the Art Gallery of NSW, the Cité Internationale des Arts, the University of Sydney and the Power Institute.
