9 FEBRUARY – 29 MARCH 2020
OPENING 5.30PM SATURDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2020
Lucas Davidson is an artist who works across a variety of media including sculpture, photography, video, sound and installation. His works are often temporal in nature and are recognised for their ability to challenge perception. Employing light, space and movement to slow down the viewing process, Davidson creates environments that actively engage viewer participation in order to question ideas about materiality.
LIVING WITH UNCERTAINTY is a series of new installations that aim to disrupt the traditional subject-object relationship within the viewing experience. Such encounters offer an opportunity to observe change as a present part of the human condition and require the viewer to take an active role in determining meaning through direct experience. For this exhibition Davidson draws upon his formative experiences of Newcastle, condensing his knowledge of the area to a single colour, translucent blue #300. By displaying this colour across multiple Lock-Up galleries Davidson presents an array of fluctuating blues that capture the light and space that permeates the surrounding environment.
Engaging with optical, sensorial and experiential aspects of perceiving, Davidson places emphasis on viewer attention and the present moment. LIVING WITH UNCERTAINTY is an exhibition that causes viewers to question what they are actually seeing. The temporal shifting qualities of the work offer a way to engage with prolonged attention and contemplation, skills that have been diminished in today’s accelerated hyper-connected world.
