A panel discussing creative responses to marginalisation and injustice within the criminal justice system and justiceINjustice, a unique collaboration between artists and lawyers at The Lock-Up.

Presented in partnership with Newcastle Writers Festival during the Festival. This panel will be facilitated by Carolyn McKay (curator and criminologist) and will feature panelists Rob Cleworth (artist), Karen Wells (lawyer) and Melinda Dundas (writer and widow of Roni Levi).

PLEASE NOTE: Location is the Wheeler Place Festival Marquee – NOT at The Lock-Up. This is a FREE event. No booking required. The event is a based on a ‘first in, first served basis.’

FACILITATOR

DR. CAROLYN MCKAY
Dr Carolyn McKay is a visual artist, curator and academic. She completed her Masters by research at Sydney College of the Arts and PhD at the University of Sydney Law School where she currently lectures in Criminal Law and Procedure. Both her academic research and her visual arts practice relate to technologies in the criminal justice system and prisons. Carolyn’s solo exhibitions in Newcastle and Sydney include Reports of Crime, etc., etc., at both The Lock-Up (2010) and Mosman Art Gallery (2011). In 2014 she was invited to exhibit in A very fine river: Convict stories from the Hunter at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. Carolyn curated Anakhronismos (2012) for Waverley Council and initiated Doing Time (2015) with the Sydney Institute of Criminology.

PANELISTS

ROB CLEWORTH
Since first exhibiting with Legge Gallery in 1993 and embarking shortly after on a period of intense study at the Glasgow School of Art as a Samstag Scholar, Rob Cleworth has continued his art practice with its focus on the relationship between photography and painting. In 2009, Cleworth was given an award for teaching excellence by Curtin University in recognition of his work helping deliver a studio based visual arts degree to men and women held in the Western Australia’s prison system.  Rob’s works are represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, The University of Western Australia Art Collection and numerous other public and private collections.

KAREN WELLS
Karen Wells has been a practicing solicitor for over fifteen years. Her area of practice has primarily been in criminal law, and she has represented hundreds of clients, many of them with significant intellectual disability, mental health and drug and alcohol problems. She has a strong interest in therapeutic jurisprudence. Before becoming a lawyer, she was a potter.  After seeing The Most Gaoled Race on Earth show at The Lock-Up a couple of years ago, she began to wonder what would happen if lawyers and artists collaborated to present stories about social justice.  justiceINjustice is the outcome of those musings and has allowed her to bring together her interest in the law and the arts.

MELINDA DUNDAS
Melinda is working through her (hopefully) final draft of a manuscript on her marriage to Roni Levi, her work with the Newcastle Legal Centre following his death and the years since. She lives in Melbourne, works in the Victorian public sector and has studied media, communications, comparative literature and the writing craft.
