I LOVE YOU MELISSA
Using the words found graffitied on a cell wall in The Lock-Up as muse, I LOVE YOU MELISSA explores the complexities of love through the work of five contemporary artists.
Well-known for its startlingly brutal architecture and melancholic past, The Lock-Up is a historic site long-associated with dominance, oppression and sadness. Found scrawled upon the walls of one of the historical cells are the words I LOVE YOU MELISSA, a tiny memento, that in amongst a building’s history of despair and sorrow, love was and is ever present.
Using this piece of graffiti as the curator’s muse, five contemporary artists have been selected to respond accordingly, showering The Lock-Up in love – love of the familial, love as devotion, lust, longing, love of lovers and lovers lost.
Featuring artists Caitlin Dempsey, Lucas Grogan, Jumaadi, Marikit Santiago and Jodie Whalen.
