Part confessional, part prophecy, Giselle Stanborough’s performance dwells on the troubles of connecting wirelessly in daily life. Exploring the ambiguity of ‘the user’ as both the subject and object of technocapitalist knowledge/power systems, “Social/Updates/Forums/Promotions/Trash” merges the personal and public domains to explore the fraught complexities, gaps and imbrications of identity and identification in a reality that is always already virtual.

ABOUT GISELLE STANBOROUGH
Featured in The Lock-Up’s exhibition FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY, Giselle Stanborough is an intermedia artist whose works examine the interpolation of the self, and the relationship between connectivity and isolation. Motivated by a curiosity in the increasing indeterminacy between the private and public spheres, Stanborough’s work often addresses contemporary interpersonal experiences in relation to technology, feminism and consumer capitalism.
Giselle’s work in FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY builds upon an earlier work of the same title presented at Carriageworks in 2020, as part of Suspended Moment: The Katthy Cavaliere Fellowship, made possible with funds from the Estate of Katthy Cavaliere in partnership with the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) and Museum of Old and New Art (Mona).
