GESTURE & PRESENCE: Jacobus Capone & Madison Bycroft
4th November – 4th December, 2016
GESTURE & PRESENCE: Jacobus Capone & Madison Bycroft
Installation, performance documentation, photography and live performance with two of Australia’s contemporary art dynamos.
Grounded in performance art practice Jacobus Capone and Madison Bycroft’s work takes the form of live performance and performance documentation, photography, video and sculptural installation. Both artists use their practice to inquire deeply into the human condition and experiences more often spoken about in philosophy and poetry: the emotional, the spiritual, the unconscious.
The relationship between the personal and the universal self, the animate and inanimate, the earth and its elemental and energetic forces; is explored experientially by the artists, becoming the basis for visually stunning, hypnotic and deeply evocative work.
Opening night will see artist Madison Bycroft perform the new work The Neo-Zoological Drama, developed during a four week residency at The Lock-Up. Featuring artists Gillian Adamson, Caitlin Dempsey, Mel O’Dell and Melbourne based musician and producer Angela Schilling and filmed around some familiar Newcastle locations, the work is inspired by Jean Painleve’s surrealist text of the same name.
