The 16th annual Critical Animals Creative Research Symposium explores the nexus of research and creation, theory and practice. The Symposium is a space to catalyse, strengthen, and navigate this nexus through the showcasing of interdisciplinary, exploratory and research driven projects; it is the room where you can really sink your teeth into the critical contexts that underpin the cultural and artistic practices of today, critiquing, unpacking, and learning with every bite.

By bringing together artists, researchers, writers, academics, thinkers and students via a mix of panels, presentations, performances, papers, workshops, and installations, this year’s symposium seeks to provoke thought, encourage collaboration and develop artistic practices and stir up new waves in theory and thought.

The Symposium centres around practitioners who are critically engaged in creative and experimental arts practices and whose work involves interrogative, discursive, or practice-led approaches to ‘research’. This year, running concurrently to the symposium is Emma Fielden’s solo exhibition, An Immeasurable Distance, which explores the nature of infinity, the universe and our human place in it. Once again, the Symposium is graciously hosted by The Lock-Up, who has been a key partner of Octapod for over ten years, supporting a range of TINA creative initiatives and events. In 2019, The Lock-Up continues as the key Critical Animals venue, working closely with Critical Animals to support the presentation of the Symposium.
