ABOUT JONO EVERETT: A fine craftsman, furniture maker, artist and designer, Jono has had a rickety journey from Asia to Europe and back again, through the highs and lows of the design world in search of the ‘ethos’ of good design and ethical product fabrication.
Jono has produced work as varied as designing and crafting furniture for Cabinet Ministers at Parliament House through to developing the Supernova Science Centre for the Newcastle Museum. He has exhibited one off pieces nationally and internationally. Currently co-managing the Soap Factory, Newcastle’s newest maker’s enterprise Jono is also a full-time creative consultant to Museums and Galleries NSW. Jono Everett’s story defines how all good design, no matter what medium, stems from the same set of rules and, if realised and practiced, can liberate the designer into a world of opportunities, projects and creative collaborations.
ABOUT SOPHIA EMMETT: Sophia Emmett completed a traineeship at the Jam Factory Craft and Design Centre in Adelaide and studied Visual Arts at Monash University, majoring in hot glass. Sophia has travelled extensively in Australia and the USA, pursuing her career in design. She has worked with a number of master glass blowers and has undertaken several artist-in-residency programs, including the Canberra School of Art and a fellowship at the Creative Glass Centre of America. In recent years Sophia has become interested in making jewellery, creating each piece as a small sculptural form. Sophia enjoys the challenge of designing and making pieces that are intimate, wearable constructions. These works have evolved from her innovative approach to materials, combined with a fascination of the relationship between texture and form.
ABOUT CREATIVE TALKS: Renew Newcastle in association with The Lock-Up presents Creative Talks, a series of breakfast lectures by people who are making a living from their creativity. Taking place on a Friday morning each month a well-regarded creative will be invited to speak for 20 minutes about the lessons they have learned growing their art into a commercial success. This will be followed by an audience Q&A and the opportunity to mingle with local creatives from a wide range of backgrounds, over a stand-up breakfast.
