The Lock-Up is proud to once again support Deborah Kelly’s multi-dimensional and cross-disciplinary project, CREATION through our Artist in Residence program.
The Lock-Up warmly welcomes Kit Spencer, a soloist performing in Newcastle as part of CREATION, a multi-disciplinary
art project instigated by artist Deborah Kelly. The CREATION choir is performing as part of opening night celebrations at the reopening of Newcastle Art Gallery.
CREATION Choir, under the guidance of musical director and composer Lex Lindsay and Choir Captain Tash Rusterholz, is singing up a storm on Friday, 27 Feb 2026 at Newcastle Art Gallery.
ABOUT KIT SPENCER
Kit is an emerging performance artist, horticulturist and teacher, living on Wangal Land, making accessible and multidisciplinary vocal practice. He led the CREATION Choir since its Sydney Opera House debut, offering creative development of new vocal works over eight iterations across Australia, including for the upcoming opening of Newcastle Art Gallery.
In 2024, he wrote and produced the one-man-show, Castrati for Sydney Fringe Festival – a cabaret-style song cycle, which explores the parallels between the maligned and extinct Castrato Soprano and his own experiences of singing through transition. Castrati underwent further development for the Old Fitz Theatre’s Late Night Season in 2025.
As a trans-man, Kit is especially conscious of the dearth of places where trans and gender diverse people can access vocal practice. He wants to support those singers to find and embrace their voices, and creatively destabilise the intensely gender-constrained vocal traditions of the Western canon.
