ARTIST IN RESIDENCE / Emma Jane Hancock

The Lock-Up warmly welcomes artist, creative producer and writer Emma Jane Hancock to the Artist in Residence 2026 program. Working at the intersection of collage, community-building and public art, Emma will use the residency as a space for creative exploration, engagement with Newcastle’s arts community and time to develop ideas connected to her longstanding interests in imagination, place and participatory collage practice.
ABOUT EMMA JANE HANCOCK
Emma Jane Hancock is an Australian born artist, creative producer and writer working at the intersection of collage, community-building and public art. She currently lives and works between the East Coast of Australia and the Colombian Caribbean. She has exhibited widely over the past two decades working under the name Emma Anna.
Originally trained as news journalist and graphic designer, Emma was employed commercially for many years in the design and architecture sector. She completed a Masters of Public Art at RMIT University in Melbourne in late 2009. Her MA project IMAG_NE was initially exhibited as part of Sculpture by the Sea Bondi where it was awarded the Art Gallery of NSW Site Specific Prize and an invitation to the inaugural Sculpture by the Sea Arhus, Denmark. IMAG_NE has since toured to over 50 locations internationally, including ephemeral installations at the National Library of Australia, the City of Santa Clarita, California and Christchurch, New Zealand as part of a program of citywide rejuvenation.
Other major public artworks and accolades include the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture UNESCO Crafting a City of Literature Public Art Concept Award (for The Elocwean Rainbow, 2017), shortlisting in the World Architecture Awards (for the NPAC Recreation Complex, 2012) and the Melbourne Arts Festival Art Tram commission (The Language of Fracture, 2017).
Emma is the founder and co-curator of La Casa Verde @lacasaverdeelprado an independent art space located in the Colombian port city of Barranquilla, She has twice been selected to participate in the Salón Nacional de Artistas de Colombia (Sol Yantra, 2017 and Está Hirviendo, 2022) and recently represented Australia at the 2025 Bienal de Cuenca in Cuenca, Ecuador with her installation A Walk in the Woods.
Collage is the central medium of Emma’s practice, as is a belief in the revolutionary potential of the human imagination. In 2020 Emma was the Kolaj World Collage Day Feature Artist. She founded Cut X Paste @cut_x_paste, an international community of collage makers and the collage curious in 2023, a project that continues to grow through regular workshops and special events. Her most recent collage compendium Once, upon a mushroom, was published in June 2025.
